The $150 Zucchini

The fruit of my labors

The true test of my thumb: is it brown or green? I've noticed that most of the time I have a very brown thumb because no matter how hard I try to grow plants, they end up dying.  But lo and behold, my garden finally started producing something! A zucchini! I really thought that after all the effort, time, and money spent working my little garden patch, it was going to wither away and die (which it really has for the most part).  It made me very sad.  But alas, I have had a bit of success.  So far I have picked a bowl of snap peas and two zucchinis.  I have spent countless hours out there and I've spent over $150 trying to make something grow.  We'll see if any of the other plants decide to persevere! Wish me luck!

my first real garden

Despite my many failed attempts over the past few years at having a green-thumb, I decided to go all out and plant a vegetable garden in our back yard. Much to my surprise, things started growing! yay! Hopefully by the end of the summer, and after hundreds of hours of work, we might have a couple vegetables!
I planted tomatoes (6 different kinds), sugar snap peas, carrots, broccoli, bell peppers, onions, zucchini, pumpkin, cantaloupe and cucumber. Also, I have a little strawberry patch and a failed attempt at lettuce which are not pictured here. In the picture above, the garden is covered with thousands of little white seeds which have been floating down from the trees and getting into everything. Those seeds are worse than firebugs! (well, on second thought, maybe not...)

Since the backyard is way too big to mow all of it, the landlords have just let the back half become overgrown. So most of our back yard looks like a puffy jungle. Olive thinks it's heaven while Peter doesn't really like grass all that much. Hopefully the grass and weeds won't over take my little garden plot which I've spent so much time, money and effort on!
