Munich Days 4-6

Munich day 4 (Friday Sept. 11th)

We woke up and went to the Deutsches Museum because we heard it was really cool. It's like Germany's version of the Smithsonian. We only had to go one train station away from where we were, but it took forever to find where the right platform was. We totally could have walked to the museum in half the time it took to figure out the trains. But we learned a whole lot about the subway/train system!

The museum was indeed really cool. Each room covers the history of a certain topic (boats, trains, windmills, air-balloons, photography, electricity, motors, etc.) so it was really cool to see how all those things got started. Peter's favorite was the model helicopter he could control and he really liked the "hot-balloons".

On the bottom level of the museum, they have a "Kinder Reich" (it means Children's Kingdom) where they display hands-on stuff. They have water and boats to play with, instruments to play, a big red fire engine to climb in, and a bunch of other fun stuff. Peter could have stayed there for days. They also had a bike with wings that really flies! That was my favorite. And I'm pretty sure Sean's favorite was when they did the electricity show (both the babies started screaming from the noise, so I took them out...) The museum was really big, so we only saw a few rooms before we had to head back to our hotel for naptime. We wanted to go back later that day, but it ended up closing at 5pm, so we went to the Olympic park instead and rode up to the top of the tower.

Being able to see the whole city from way up there was really neat. There was a cycling team blasting music at the very tippy top level of the tower. I'm guessing it was the German cycling team?? Maybe having a Friday night practice just for fun? They all waved to Peter. Then we had a peaceful sit at the lake and a couple swans came begging for food.

Sidenote: Germany has no drinking fountains!!!! I tried asking where one was and I had a bunch of confused Germans staring blankly at me. So we bought water bottles and we have to fill them up in the bathroom sink every day before we head out.

Other sidenote: I think I have tendinitis in my right arm, so I am going to give you the condensed version of day 5 and 6.

Munich day 5 (Saturday 12th)

Detusches Museum again, saw the rest of the stuff (history of tunnels, water works, etc.), PBJ’s again (we eat them every day) on the rooftop, naptime, park, grocery store, microwave dinners, and ended the day feeling right at home with a tub of icecream and an episode of Psych!

Peter loves to make Jackson laugh - he has a couple funny things he does (bouncing in front of him on the bed, saying “blah” right in his face, tickling him) Nearly everyone we pass on the road oohs and aahs over Jackson, especially when he wears his little bear jacket. He has such a ready smile too - people go crazy over him :)

Munich Day 6 (Sunday 13th)

Woke up and packed our suitcases to move to a hotel down the street, but the room wasn't ready yet. So we took a picnic to the English Garden and discovered an Oompa band playing in the chinese tower!

What fun!

We realized after a while that we needed to get ready for church because it would take a 10 min walk, 2 train rides, and another 10 minute walk to get to the church. We rushed back to our hotel to change, took the train to the site of Oktoberfest (which starts next week), walked to the church, discovered it was closed until the year 2010, walked back to a park we found, and hung out for a while because Peter was asleep. Around dinner, we decided to go hunt for food and found a big festival. Munich was having a "Green City" fest where they encouraged people to ride bikes, and be more environmentally aware. We found a food stand that had a sign for Gyros (yum!) but what they gave us was this weird looking meat mixture with creamy stuff on top inside of an ice-cream cone bowl...yes...weird... but surprisingly tasty! Then it was off to bed with us so we could be fresh for our trip to Vienna early the next morning.

Munich was totally great and it convinced us that we would love living in a big city, especially one with a humongous beautiful park running through the middle. Hopefully we'll be spending more time in Munich on our way back home to Utah.

And now, it's off to Vienna!

  1. Sorry we forgot to tell you about the remodeling of the church! The other chapel in Munich is the Stake Center at Hoffbrunn Str.84, where all the meetings are being held for now.
